Minister Joyce was interviewed by Chattanooga, TN radio station WNOO Hostess, Ms. Willie McClendon, alongside Minister Marcellus Barnes who is the founder of Sounds of Unity on February 8, 2024 at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. They discussed their experience in Black Gospel music for Black History Month. Minister Joyce was honored to speak on the legacy of her father, Reverend William Ryan, Sr and his contribution to Black Gospel Music. This program was sponsored by WCTI/PBS Television.

February 2024 Black History Month featuring Reverend Doctor William Henry Ryan, Sr.

Reverend Doctor William Henry Ryan, Sr. was ahead of his time during the mid 20th century manifestly contributing to American Black and Gospel History.
Sadly, he met with an untimely passing at the young age of 51 while he was pastoring The Greater Salem Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky. He was a native of Decatur, Alabama and graduated from Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Alabama.

He received his Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Zion College in 1962, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He served as Vice President of the Kentucky State Body of the National Baptist Convention of America and received the Ambassador For Christ Certificate.

But before Dr. Ryan, Sr. answered the call to preach, he formed The Ryan Gospel Singers and performed throughout the United States. He also founded and sang in the singing group, The Gospel Harmonizers.  Furthermore, he penned the name, The Star Lighters, a gospel singing group of siblings and cousins from of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lafayette, GA.

He pastored two different churches: Prospect Baptist Church in West Armuchee, GA and New Salem Baptist Church in Dewberry, GA when he received the call to pastor the Greater Salem Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky in 1958.

In his short time pastoring at Greater Salem, he added the Christian Education Building and recorded two 45 singles. The most famous songs were Someone To Care and The Love of God.  He also recorded The Lord Will Make A Way Somehow and Jesus Will Be Your Friend. He opened up in concert for the great Mr. James Cleveland in downtown Louisville.
The Someone To Care recording was re-recorded on an album, Father and Son (William H. Ryan, Jr.)  by the Union Hill Baptist Church, in the 1980’s. Dr. Ryan’s history is in the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, 200 E. M. L. King Blvd, Chattanooga, TN 37403.

He was married to Laura Dora Sue Ryan, and fathered 9 children, 6 of whom followed their father’s influence by becoming ministers of the Gospel.
